About The Foundation

Mission

Advance & revolutionize medicine in theory & practice by holding to the fundamental & unifying principle Primum Non Nocere in its correct translation: to help, or at least to do no harm.

...ωφελεειν η μη βλαπτειν...(...to help, or at least to do no harm...)

Hippocrates, Epidemics, Bk. I, Sect. XI, c. 400 b.c.

The Why

"If I could change two things to make our world better, it would be public health and food science."

"Unwillingness alone should be a contraindication."

"Science is supposed to observe Nature, not attempt to change her."

- Dr. Maria Gussak, N.D.

The How

The Gussak ND Family Foundation carries this mission in the following activities:

  • Naturopathic Medical Care - Providing medical services and hydrotherapy treatments at her clinic in Wenatchee, WA to leave a legacy that drugless therapeutics can be more effective and powerful when used knowledgeably.
  • Continuing Education - To continue the work of her mentors and their organizations to ensure the future preservation of Naturopathic Medicine in a modern world such as the education from The Carroll Institute carried by Dr. Letitia Dick-Kronenberg, N.D.
  • Caution of over-medicalization - To express against medicalization, when appropriate, and to encourage that medical care begins in the home with family and nutrition
  • Drugless Therapeutics - To provide access to families and children who may choose or need non-medical institution based interventions to ensure their philosophical or religious freedoms.
  • Center for Excellence - To train future doctors (particularly Naturopathic Physicians) in the art and science of natural therapeutics in conjunction with the N.M.I. as her main physician association to manifest Center for Excellence
  • Local Health Club  Spa - To provide a public access institution for health and hydrotherapy to fill the gap in medical care by using natural and drugless therapy (i.e. hydrotherapy, sauna, exercise, fresh air, sunshine, community, etc.).  This facility will be a Health Club & Spa for the local community modeled after Thermes in Germany.
  • The Gussak Center for the Study of Iatrogenicity (Iatrogenicity.org) -  Continue the work in Iatrogenicity by identifying susceptibility and promote individualized care based on polymorphisms using principles of homeopathy, constitutional assessment, individual enzyme deficiency, and electro-cellular matrix interactions.
  • BeeTheMedicine.com - Promote the education of apitherapy and Bee Venom Therapy to be used safely, knowledgeably, and sustainably in a way that respects the scientific value of the apis mellifera  medicines while not medicalizing this folk remedy.
  • Sauna & Environmental Medicine - To preserve and promote the education, understanding, and value of traditional Sauna (pronounced Sow-na) practice to be a more mainstream and home based therapy accessible to most.  The future goal would be deliver a mobile sauna to people affected by acute & chronic environmental exposures as a clinical ecology therapeutic.
  • BioEthics - To maintain and preserve the basic and fundamental principles of bioethics, especially in medicine, by education and reminding our society about the 4 fundamental principles: respect for autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice.
  • Philosophy & Logic-  To encourage and maintain critical and independent thinking skills.  To expand upon the philosophy of medicine, science, physics, and knowledge.
  • Natural Physical Law - To support and expand work on seeking fundamental natural laws that dictate Medicine & Physiology in order to better appreciate the art and science of medical practice.
  • Medical Autonomy - Seek to preserve a society with medical freedom because unwillingness alone should be a contraindication.
  • Individualism -  To promote individualistic considerations and outliers in medicine when the standard care (which is considered successful for 1-2 standard deviations of a population) is not appropriate.
  • Entrepreneur & Business Support - To share insights for success in a medical practice and getting through medical school.
  • Physician Burnout - To support and identify Burnout in Healthcare Providers (a.k.a. Compassion Fatigue) so that they may in turn help others better.
  • Supporting other non-profits.
  • Encourage the following values in medicine - Privacy, Liberty,  Independence, Self-Sufficiency, Kindness, Generosity, Integrity , Prudence

VASTLAPÄEV: CREAMS PUFFS, SAUNA, AND SLEDDING

Estonians are really good at making winter fun and cheerful.  For the day before Lent begins (a.k.a. Lent, the day before Ash Wednesday, Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras), our last hoorah's are celebrated in a wholesome and family oriented way before a spiritual fast.  The day's tasks include enjoying a cream puff, sledding, split pea soup (vegetarian or with ham), and sauna! Our Future Vision is to hold this in the beautiful winter wonderland of Leavenworth, WA.
